Thanks JAM for this initiative. I want to tell of my experience at the PENINSULA in Hong Kong at the Spring Moon restaurant where I have been proposed shark fin soup. When I asked to see the manager of the restaurant to explain how harmfull this whole trade was to the environment, he could only answer that it was part of a Chinese restaurant menu whatever. Such lousy answer.
When I read interviews of Mr Kadoorie exlaining that the Peninsula has as a mission to help protect the environment, it makes me want even more to boycott the Peninsula group of hotels. The first thing he should do is go down to his restaurant and kitchens and stop this trade of shark fins.
Help spread the word to all: avoid the Peninsula, they are promoting harmful trades endangering our environment.
Singapore Airlines has pulled out all dishes containing shark fins.

One of the most famous ones I know of is the Ah Yat Abalone restaurant. They have locations all over--Bangkok, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai--just to name a few.
The website is all in chinese, but you get the idea from the pictures that they are very proud of thier dishes. The head chef is very famous in the foodie world.

Just went to the Regent hotel in Singapore, a Four Seasons hotel, and they are serving shark fin soup at breakfast!
Until when will this whole shameful trade continue. Till there is not a single shark left on our oceans? Dont these guys understand the impact on nature and on the heritage we are passing on to our kids?
Shame on the Four Seasons hotel for supporting such practices. LWC

I have always supported the WWF and their efforts. I wish though, they would make a little more noise about this.
Its interesting, the deeper I dig into this subject the more I learn how widespread shark killings are--and not just for thier fins. I am starting to learn that millions of sharks are being killed for their cartilage and then put into pill form--to top it off, the pills don't do a damm thing, they are total bunk--its amazing how far a little creative marketing can go.
A factory in Costa Rica was reported to kill in one year 111,000 sharks, and in American waters over 2,400,000 per year are being killed just for their cartilage. I don't want to imagine what this number is worldwide.
Disgusting!
