Any good ideas when exploring Halong Bay in Vietnam. My husband and I are going there for a 3 to 4 day stay. Thanks in advance, Rosemary.

Hi, I would recommend that you experience a fantastic cruise amongst the islands within Halong Bay

The operator is Emeraude Cuise: http://www.emeraude-cruises.com/

A bit of history on the cruise boat:

In 1910 a paddle steamer called the Emeraude was offering unforgettable cruises in Halong Bay for visitors to what was then French Indochina. The Emeraude was part of a flotilla owned by the Roque family who had left Bordeaux in 1858 in search of adventure and fortune. Over a period of more than 50 years they found both. After several ups and downs including successful trading and timber businesses, near bankruptcy and being taken hostage by pirates, the Roque brothers built Emeraude, Perle, Saphir, Rubis and Onyx to ferry passengers and freight along the waterways of Indochina and cruise on magnificent Halong Bay.
Today the Emeraude offers a regular cruise service on board a luxurious replica steamer with 38 cabins meticulously designed to evoke the nostalgic charm of colonial Indochina.

I personally loved it, so did my parents. Great memories. Rog.

When I travel I want to stay as far away from tourists as possible, so any chance I can to get in a boat and explore where I can be on my own, I jump on the opportunity. I know Halong Bay has some caves to be explored and the easiest way of doing it is by Kayak. I can?t think of anything better than floating in the bay with no one around cruising in and out of the caves with a few of my closest friends.

JAM has the right idea here if you are a more active sort.

Halong Bay gets enormous numbers of mainland Chinese tourists who go out on the water for only a half-day at most. Your own experience will be better the further out you go. If you don't want a larger luxurious cruise feel as with the Emeraude, then a camping/kayaking trip is a great way to go.

Try Buffalo Tours in Hanoi. Well known operator with pedigree in this area.
