Dear All,

My friend is asking me he wants to undertake diving in Malaysia: and he is thinking about 3 areas in the country: Sabah, Langkawi and Tioman Island.

Which area you recommend is the best to go to: what is the different between these three places in the country. What is the most likely thing that we will see there?

Any idea of this?

Undertake as in taking up diving from scratch or already a diver and wants to dive in these locations?

Tioman would be the most cost effective. There are numerous dive centres in Singapore and Malaysia that go to Tioman weekly. The dive course package is inexpensive. At Tioman, there are varied hard and soft corals, fishes and critters. If you are lucky, you may bump into a white- or black- tip shark. Diving season: March to Nov
Sabah: Two popular sites - Mabul and Sipadan. Beautiful dive sites, comparatively to Tioman. But will cost more for diving in addition to the flight to Tawau (Sabah). There are a few dive centres in Singapore that conduct courses over there. Diving season about the same as Tioman
Langkawi: I think there is only one (at least) dive site but the travel to and fro the island for a day trip is not efficient. Not unless you can do a liveaboard (I am not certain if it is available). No idea about the dive site but a friend who has been there said it was good.
