Hey all, I'm going to be in HongKong in June (I'm from Canada), and I'm looking for some challenging but fun XC or downhill. I'm cool with either one.
I would really like to hit up Lantau island, like a climb to the peak and then a nice downhill ride down. Something that could be done solo in about half a day or so.
I'm also going to Guilin right after, so any information on some good in and out trails there would be great.
I'm doing everything solo and I would really like to do some mountain climbs that can easily be done in one day.
Any info on getting to and from the trails would be great, since I really don't want to be driving in HK.

Hi,
Your going to be here in June, that's damned hot'n'sweaty and every trail's full of spiders the diameter of 29" wheels...BUT it's still worth getting out there.
Lantau: The best XC trail on the Island (possibly HK) has to be Chi Ma Wan which can be started immediatly off the ferry in Mui Wo. Hydrate well it's hilly most of the way with only a couple of options early on for purchasing water en-route. For the ultimate downhill on Lantau head by road to the Buddha 400metres above sea level then pass all the tourist tat to the giant log sculpture thingy whereupon starts the Buddha to catchwater downhill trail (currently illegal)... Quiet knarly in places and does favour full suss over hardtail. Most D.hillers & Free riders favour Tai Mo Shan which is more extensive and can be reached by sharing a van normally on a saturday from central.
Check back in with us when you come out and we'll get you mobile,
Steve

Thanks for the help Steve, I have been looking at the Buddha in Google earth and I'm a little bit confused as to which road you are talking about.
I'm really looking forward to the Chi Ma Wan trail. I am wondering if I should be getting a permit for it and how I might go about getting one.
I can't wait to get out there and bust up these trails, maybe I should be bringing my 29er, just to see how big these spiders really are!
