It is about time for some formal talks with the government. I guess safety is the main issue, then next on the agenda should be having more ridable, sensible and legal trails.
I have taken two German MTB World Champions (4X and downhill) riding in some famous HK MTB trails including Chi Ma Wan and Tai Mo Shan. They sincerely think Tai Mo Shan is one of the best trails they have ever riden because it has all kinds of varieties of terrain and very fast and exciting. So there you go.
We should definitely prepare a list of demands/requests and submit it to the relevant department for their consideration before the meeting.
In addition, I think it will also be a good idea to write to The Hon Timothy Fuk, President, Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong. He is the major force behind promoting sports in HK and I am sure things will become much easier if we have his backing or blessing.
We also need to gather all local/expat, registered/non-registered cycling associations in HK to attend this meeting and must have a joint statement.
Oh well, just some ideas.
We are not going to get this chance very often.
You can also try kayak-and-hike.com and contact Paul. He operates in Sai Kung and usually take people out on kayak trips but I guess you may rent kayaks from him if the place and time are right. Good luck.
There are a lot of people out there in Hong Kong (local and expats) who are so much into the outdoor and adventure races. Yes, may be you can call them weekend warriors but the fact is that a large percentage of them are pretty serious athletes and would like to challenge themselves and see themselves improve in adventure races. But the sad fact is that there just aren't enough events in Hong Kong to cater for the needs in this particular area of interest. But we all know there is a huge potential in Hong Kong alone!!! Just look at the number of participants at all of these trail running races (AA Off Road, KOTH, MM, TW etc etc)

So, what are we going to do? Do we have to purely rely on sponsorship? Can the government actually help to promote the sport??? May be subsidise events? With the hype of the Olympics next year in Hong Kong and good old Mr Fok supporting all the other "famous" sporting events (table tennis, badminton etc.), surely he will support the so call minority sports. May be we just need some kind of adventure sports association or someone to come up with a plan and present it to him. Just a thought.
Sun block is useful but long sleeve will save your life. Don't just try to catch the sun and look cool with your bare chest out there. Think of the potential danger you might encounter. May be it's not a good idea to paddle all this way in an inflatable kayak at all. Anyway, enjoy the outdoor but be smart and responsible to yourself too.
