Worth going to Nepal for just 10 days, or at most 2 weeks?

I've delayed visiting Nepal for far too many years now. The main reason being that I've read & heard from numerous sources that you need at least 3 weeks in order to do the good hikes.

Working a corporate job with very limited annual leave, the most time I can take is 2 weeks. How much can you really see & do in 2 weeks, or even 10 days (leaving on a friday & taking the following week off) ?

Thank you very much.

Three weeks goes give many more options esp as it allows acclimatisation time for going higher.

You do have some choices though. There are treks of 10 days and upwards in the Langtang. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek gets you to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,100m and takes 10 days or so - faster if you are in good shape.

The other idea is to fly in to Jomsom on the Annapurna Circuit. This cuts up to a week off though it does remove some of the variety of scenary. Fly both ways and from there you can hike up to Mustang and back in around a week.

Re:Worth going to Nepal for just 10 days, or at most 2 weeks?

I *much* prefer cycling to trekking: you cover more ground & can skip the less thrilling scenery whilst stopping at the more stunning; and there's the obvious enjoyment of the downhills (which would otherwise be murder on my knees if walking).

And whilst I've toured several countries on bike, it never occured to me to try it in Nepal because of (a) the elevation, and (b) my image of Nepal has always been one steep peak after another... and far from bike-friendly.

But if it's realistic, then that would be a great vacation - thanks Sprockett. I will google it but any recommendations or tips you have are much appreciated too. Cheers.

Could the Action Asia team post a list of the top 5 trekking tour companies in Nepal. That would be useful and help all of us that struggle with some many aggressive adverts on the web. I am lookind for credibility and seriousness. Safety at stake.

Thank you in advance, regards, Rosemary.

Dear Lim,

Nepal is definitely an interesting place to visit nowadays, but I think10 days, even for 2 weeks might not be enough if you want to see more of the country: Of course one of the important things to do is climbing Mount Himalayan, I believe it is one of the Great Adventure Game you should do at least once in a life ? as to prove yourself a ?real adventurer?. I remembered Action Asia has covered quite a lot of it in the last few issues that shows a lot of people loving it and how importance it is in ?adventure world?.

Try to check the website of Nepal Tourism Board: www.welcomenepal.com, and you can find a lot of information there. There are over 1000 trekking companies in the country, but among those I can recommend some: as to fit your priority in credibility, seriousness and Safety

Try to contact: I Trek Nepal first
They are a big international company for trekking in Nepal: with branches in USA, Nepal and Hong Kong etc
Website: www.itreknepal.com

There are also some local dive operators in the country which I think should be OK.

Re:Worth going to Nepal for just 10 days, or at most 2 weeks?

I just had a friend who came back from a trek to Tapovan and I must say I am little (make that a lot) jealous. He spent a little over ten days on this trip that took him over the Gangotri glacier up to the valley below Mt Kailash to the base of the Bhagiratha peaks. He showed me an amazing picture of Mt. Sudarshan.

If anyone is interested, this is a trek that could be done by someone with some experience and technical knowledge but more as a precautionary measure than a necessity. No need for crampons or ice axes if you go during the right time of year, just a good sleeping bag (he went in the middle of Sept and said it was muddy and mild).

I don?t know what I?ll be doing next July or Sept, but it?s a good bet I?ll be somewhere around Tapovan.

Re:Worth going to Nepal for just 10 days, or at most 2 weeks?

Well, you can actually do a lot of things in that time period. Be very productive and avoid wasting time. Do mount biking for a day or two, hiking for another few days, whaever else you have passion for. Get up in the morning and go to sleep when you are super tired. I promise, this 10 days will seem like a month to you. I have done that in week and it was awesome! Good luck.

Re:Worth going to Nepal for just 10 days, or at most 2 weeks?

although more time would be better - i totally think 2 weeks in nepal is better than no time in nepal!

you could totally fit in a short trek in the annapurna area with amazing mountain and village views then enjoy a few days on the river (kayaking or rafting) and then a weekend in chitwan doing jungle safari.

i actually live in nepal, and my little brother came last year for a visit for only 13 days and we were able to squeeze all of this in! he did the 4 day poon hill trek folllowed by a 4 day kayak clinic on phew lake and the seti river. the river dropped him off just near the chitwan national park so it worked perfectly for him to fit in a 3 day jungle safari as well.

you have to be organized, but you can have a wicked two weeks in nepal for sure!
